Tribal Advancement

The Council of Energy Resource Tribes (CERT) also extends its efforts to educate those whose decisions and actions affect Tribal interests and values in governance, Tribal economic security and Tribal energy by participating in conferences, workshops and symposia sponsored by state/regional citizens organizations, universities and trade associations. CERT is often requested to inform federal and state officials on Indian energy, environmental and jurisdictional perspectives.

The Council of Energy Resource Tribes makes education opportunities available through the help of its student education program, energy workshops and conferences. Tribal members, corporate professionals and lawmakers are able to gain knowledge on Tribal energy issues to further advance the Tribes and the United States energy policy.

Through CERT’s Indian education program, Indian students become empowered with the commitment to meet challenges of higher education and join the growing ranks of Indian professionals serving the cause of Tribal development, Tribal self-governance and the integration of Tribes in the larger American political economy.

Tribal unemployment is high, from as much as 85-90% to a low of 15%. Over half of the Indian families living in their homelands have income under than the official poverty line, some by as much as 25%.
